I have two research tracks. First, I work within the field of experimental cognitive linguistics and study the mental images that people generate when using language, as well as how we use metaphors in language and figurative thought.
My second track involves phonetics, where I do both articulatory and acoustic studies of speech production in a variety of languages (German, Korean, Yoruba, Even).
I like to do purely descriptive research (e.g. describing the sound system of an endangered language), as well as research that is theoretically motivated, including both experiments and computational modeling. In general, my work is heavily quantitative and stresses the importance of modern statistical approaches, as well as the pivotal role of complexity theory in science.
